Busting the Labour myths in the Shooters Hill by-election

Green Party volunteers have heard a lot of claims about the Labour Council’s record while we’ve been out meeting residents and canvassing for their votes. Many of us are hearing the following Labour myths on the doorstep:

MYTH 1 – Only Labour can win in Shooters Hill

Labour voters are switching to local community champion Tamasin Rhymes in the Shooters Hill by-election. Former Labour Councillor Ivis Williams is backing Tamasin.

MYTH 2 – Not voting Labour will let Reform in

We have spoken to hundreds of voters on the doorstep in the last few weeks and fewer than 1 in 20 have told us they are voting Reform. The Green Party came second in Shooters Hill in 2022 and the Green Party were also second here in last year’s London elections. Labour KNOW that the Green Party’s Tamasin Rhymes has a serious chance of winning this election. So they are using a recent Labour defeat to Reform in a parliamentary by-election the North of England to scare Shooters Hill residents into voting Labour.

MYTH 3 – Labour stands up for the community

Labour THREATENED their own councillor Ivis Williams with suspension when she stood up for Shooters Hill residents. The Green Party doesn’t threaten its councillors for doing their job like Ivis did. So many of you tell us Labour is letting you down. Tamasin will press the Council to rethink its position on the sale of community buildings and the Equestrian Centre and better engage with residents.

MYTH 4 – Only Labour care about the cost of living

Tamasin Rhymes and the Green Party support:
1. Ending the two-child benefit cap
2. Free school meals for every child
3. Restoring disability benefits Labour has proposed to cut
4. Insulating homes to prevent mould and cut energy bills

Ivis Williams, Labour Cllr in Shooters Hill 2018-2025, says: “There is a need for more opposition voices in the Town Hall, and I believe that the Green Party candidate can bring that voice and be a champion for residents.”

The Shooters Hill by-election takes place on Thursday 26 June.
